Our Community

Originally from Romania, Father completed four years of seminary at the University of Timisoara where he acquired a Master’s in social psychology and theology. In Canada, he completed his Master’s in social work from U of T.

Father is sought out for counseling by people from all sorts of backgrounds and cultures.

Deacon Pawel came to St. John’s in 2007 from the UK. Ordained in 2010, he is now Prefect of the Lived Theology School. He is appreciated for his encyclopedic knowledge of church history and dry Scottish sense of humour.

Handles computers, audio-visual production, web presence, and community communication strategies.

Our economos. Starting at 5 a.m., George takes good care of everything the community receives and manages our stewardship.

Trained in Moscow, Tatiana has worked with the Mission for over two decades. She recently painted the ‘White Angel’ mural and leads Saturday arts lessons for youth and people with disabilities.

A Brother of Mercy and community leader. He coordinates all volunteers, outreach to other churches, and manages the community advisory council.

A long-time advocate for housing and mental health in Toronto. Elected president in 2023, she is an active presence in our daily life.

A social service worker originally from Sri Lanka. She manages our Scarborough affiliate and brings a wealth of cultural and language expertise.

Johan lends a steady, welcoming presence at the door during the early mornings at St. John’s, greeting everyone with dignity.

A kind soul who reminds us weekly about the most precious gift of our community — the gentleness and love of the poor. Mary is also a founding member of the Thursday singing club.

Diane has worked in the ‘front end’ of St. John’s Bakery for many years. She greets customers with her Maritime charm.

Recently joined from Ethiopia, Kidan helps with the Mission’s Cooking Program, prep food for community meals.

Jacob helps with the Mission’s Abilities Program, which integrates people with disabilities into our shared community life.

Chris is a registered psychotherapist, working with St. Macrina Counselling Services from the Mission. He is also an active member in the community’s life.

Ozcan assists in organization of the day, and welcomes community members and people with disabilities, helping them to integrate into the community. Ozcan first came to the Mission as a placement student; he returned to support the Mission’s disabilities program. He has since taught us many lessons about hospitality.

From 5–8:30 a.m., Tuesday through Friday. Sandra shares her beautiful voice and Tamil repertoire. Mimi brings experience in grassroots community work and emergency housing for Ethiopian newcomers.
